Training your Boston Terrier

It can take a lot of time and dedication to train your Boston Terrier. They are extremely friendly small dogs, but you need to let them socialize when they are very young to get used to being around other animals and family. You can start getting them used to their surroundings, people and other animals from about eight weeks of age.

It is important to watch your Boston Terrier’s behavior. When they first arrive at your home it is important that you teach them what is off limits, and what they can do. This goes hand in hand with house training. If your puppy does not know where it can and cannot go to the bathroom, it may try and urinate on everything that it sees to mark their territory.

You will want to give your Boston Terrier plenty of toys so that it does not chew on furniture and other household items. A Boston Terrier can be quite playful, so you want to make sure that it gets plenty of exercise and activity throughout the day. Toys and chew sticks can be really important, they are also a great way to reward your puppy.

If you plan to be away from the home, while and work or even running an errand, it may be important to train your puppy to a crate or kennel. This will give them a safe place to stay when you are not around. Let them take the time to get used to a crate so that they do not bark or whine when you are away. Sit them in there for small periods of time, and then gradually increase the amount of time. This will let them know that it is ok for them to be in there, as well as to know you will be back to let them out.

Let them know who their leader is. Establishing leadership is important so that they know who to listen to. It really helps their behavior. One method of doing so is called P.E.G.S., which stands for playing, eating, grooming and sleeping. These are the four things that make up your dogs behavior. If one person in the household focuses on working with these four things with your Boston Terrier, your puppy will earn respect of this person and tame their behavior.

It is extremely important that you give them plenty of exercise. Boston Terriers are quite lively animals, and will act out if they have too much energy. Going for long walks and playing fetch with them are great ways to lose some energy. They will make a better companion dog for your household if you give them the opportunity on a daily basis to go out and get some exercise.

Keep in mind that your Boston Terrier is a very sensitive dog. You do not need to be very harsh when training them, but you do need to let them know what is right and wrong. Spending time with your new puppy is vital to a properly trained pet who will respect you for many years. The last thing to keep in mind is that you never want to train your dog when you are stressed and tired, as your puppy will pick up on it and will be more difficult to train.
